We brewed the extract version of this recipe back on 12/1/2007. Used 1/2 lb brown sugar and 1/2 lb home made Belgian Candi sugar. Once bottled, put it away in a safe place and let the beer age. It takes a while for the brown sugar flavors to settle down. This beer, now 2+ yrs old, just won 2nd place in the Old Ale and English Barleywine category at the 2010 Bluebonnet Homebrew competition. It's a good recipe and your patience with be rewarded.

Partial mash with White Labs Burton yeast (which BTW will really stink up your home). Brewed a half batch of a bitter with the yeast first, in lieu of a starter. The clone is quite good. Lots of flavor despite all the sugar, but it's not white sugar. Kind of a heavy brown ale, not really roasty. The yeast isn't neutral; it definitely brings some fruity notes, maybe a little banana (did I let it get too warm? If so, it doesn't taste wrong). There's some alcohol warmth, although that may mellow with age. I can no longer get T.O.P. locally so I can't do a side by side, but it is quite good only a couple months after brew day. Certainly a good value kit.
