I agree with the previous review, it is very roasty. I thought it was kind of similar to a nut brown. If you like coffee then this could be something for you. This beer is best if you can ferment at low temperatures. I did the AG version and fermented at around 55. In all it was a good beer - I have yet to have a bad recipe from AHS! I must add that during the boil and fermentation it smelt amazing... probably one of the best smelling beers that I have ever made.
I made this a while back and was also expecting a little more hop flavor and aroma to come through, and it was roasty but the Diebels Alt I've had in Germany wasn't too far off. What surprised me is that I first started drinking it about 5 weeks after putting it the bottles and it was decent. But I put a couple of bottles away and forgot about them for nearly a year. I "re-found" the bottles I stashed, threw them in the fridge and lo-and-behold, it was a damn fine beer! I was surprised and impressed. I fermented a bit on the warm side, but if you are patient enough to wait a few months, I would recommend doing that with a portion of the batch. Cheers!
A bit roasty for an alt, but only one week in the bottle, primed with dme, and is wonderful! gets better everyday. I also dryhopped with 3/4 oz vanguard leaf, and that gave it a smooth creamy taste, also fermented cool 55 degrees. Highly recommend for ale lovers that like the german hops.
