I brewed this with WLP320 and it turned out very good. Just watch your fermentation temps so you don't end up with excessive banana or clove esters. Served this up to some friends who like Oberon and they said this beer was great and tasted very similar.
Finally got a chance to compare this to an actual bottle of Oberon. My Fairy King ale has been in the bottle about 8 months now, so it's as aged and carbed up as it's going to get. This and the real Oberon are similar in character - both a nice wheat ale, but without the usual spice or cloves and bananas of a belgian or hefe. As others have said, this ale is quite a bit darker than the real deal. Oberon is a very light, pale yellow, and cloudy with floaters. The Fairy King ale is more of a dark yellow going on amber. As you might expect, the Fairy King ale has more of a slight toasty caramel flavor to it. I detect almost a bit of a cidery flavor too. The Oberon, on the other hand, is a little lighter in body with a nuttier, more citrusy flavor. This "clone" is not a bad brew, but I wish it was just a little closer to the real thing.
Update to my earlier review. I still don't like it much but it has been sampled by 7 different people and comments ranged from "it's all right" to "this is good." I guess it's just me.
Pretty darn good. I kegged this one.....It's hard to beat Bell's
Approximately 3 month ago I brewed and bottle this extract kit using 320. I followed the recipe and hit the numbers. It was before Oberon was available and I enjoy Oberon. This is a very good American wheat. Like I said, i like Oberon. I compared this to the real deal and it is nothing like Oberon. I did a head-to-head taste test and I preferred AHS's brew. It is a lot darker (amber) vs. Oberon (pale). Oberon had more citrusy notes. The taste wasn't even close. That said, I will brew this kit again. I really liked it, but it isn't even close to Oberon (not even the same ballpark, but I liked this better).
